PRE-ACCLIMATIZE TO HIGH ALTITUDE AND ENJOY YOUR TRIP TO THE FULLEST

If you’re planning a trip to a high-altitude destination, it’s highly recommended that you pre-acclimatize so as to reduce the negative effects of altitude sickness.

There is much advice available for anyone who’s planning on taking a trip to a high-altitude destination.

From once-you-get-there easy-to-do tips to our acclimatization programs, we’ve covered the importance of planning, training and preparing in time for your trip.

This time though, we’ll talk about the exact health benefits that pre-acclimatizing will provide you once you travel with Andean Lodges.

Fend off Acute Mountain Sickness

Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or soroche as it is known in Peru, can really ruin any traveler’s trip to a high altitude location. By no means does this condition affect everyone; however, you should prepare well in order to avoid it.

AMS can first appear when the body ascends to altitudes higher than 8,000 feet or 2,500 meters above sea level.

The most common symptoms are headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, lethargy, poor sleep and loss of appetite. The best way to avoid all this is to pre-acclimatize with training programs.

Such programs are highly recommended, and we have acclimatization programs available for your first days following arrival in Cusco that will help you to avoid altitude sickness, while making your stay more comfortable and enjoyable.

Push your performance through the roof

The whole point of pre-acclimatizing is to force your body into changing, as if it had already been at high-altitude.

Following a good training routine will drive your body into creating more red blood cells, hence improving oxygen delivery in your body.

This will result in improved aerobic and anaerobic performance while hiking in Cusco and at Mount Ausangate, giving you improved strength, stamina and endurance.

Don’t let the altitude slow you down

Another factor to consider is recovery time on hikes around the city and in the mountains.

When get to Cusco city you might notice that walking, talking and breathing simultaneously can be more difficult. Even walking up and down the street might make you tired. Imagine recovery time while hiking around Mount Ausangate, at a higher altitude.

Pre-acclimatizing by taking part in any of our programs will make this transition easier by preparing your body with the conditioning it needs to function efficiently at high altitude.

That way, you won’t need to rest as much on your Ausangate trekking adventure as you would if you hadn’t prepared in advance.
