For all of you who are going to the “El Camino Del Apu Ausangate” (The Apu Ausangate´s Trail), we should stress the need of a previous acclimatization period. During the trek, we will go over a mountain pass at 5,150 meters above the sea level. So, remember to drink lots of water and/or coca leaf tea.

You must be in good health and physical condition. Before you leave for the trek, you should allow yourself at least 3 to 4 days, in higher altitude places. It’s difficult to predict how altitude will affect you, as reactions are very individual and independent of age and physical condition.

Above 10,000 ft. / 3,000 m., common, mild symptoms are headaches, loss of appetite, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, etc.

Following simple rules upon arriving in Cusco, at 11,000 ft. / 3,400 m., like resting, walking slower, taking light meals, drinking plenty of water and coca leaf tea, and less or no alcohol at all, etc., should help you reduce initial disturbances. Before departing, you should research high mountain medicine, and maybe, buy one of the widely approved products (like “Diamox”).
