Acclimatization

Hiking at an average altitude of 4,600 meters above sea level requires a period of acclimatization. Indeed, at that altitude, the organism receives less oxygen, thus provoking altitude sickness, headaches, nauseas, dizziness and general fatigue.

For that reason, it is very important for our hikers to have an acclimatization time period, before any altitude hike to take place. Therefore, we highly recommend at least a 3-day stay in Cusco, around 3.350 meters above sea level, and in the surrounding region.

Thinking about your well-being and for you to better enjoy your experience, visiting Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Southern Peru, Andean Lodges offers you a variety of activities that you could do around Cusco, while your body adapts to the high Andes´ altitude.
